Lip Primer Review :: e.l.f. vs MAC

Lipstick is my all time favorite beauty product. I feel instantly put together when I have on lipstick. Lipstick is like the curtains in a room, it’s the last touch that instantly times everything together.  And as a southern girl, I was taught to never leave the house without color on my lips. 😉 Thanks, mama!

I can’t believe as an almost 29 year-old lipstick addict I’ve never used a lipstick primer. I mean, lipstick stains, especially when you favor reds, bright pinks and dark, almost gothic, hues like I do. I decided to compare two lip primers: e.l.f. lip primer and MAC prep + prime lip.

The first big difference is the price tag. While both are reasonably priced, e.l.f. is much more budget-friendly at just $3. MAC’s primer will stretch your wallet a little more at $16.

I was pretty surprised at how different the primers look and feel. e.l.f. feels more like a lip balm and looks like a nude lipstick when it is on. MAC feels like a moisturizer and is virtually invisible. See the difference below.

I thought e.l.f.’s version would create a base foundation, but unfortunately this primer compromises the integrity of the lipstick color.

MAC’s primer perfectly moisturizers lips {even dry, winter lips!} enough to keep color vibrant through coffee, popcorn & a movie and dinner with hubs – I ate wings and still had a perfectly colored pout, y’all!

To show you how these primers work, I wore both and put on my favorite red lippy.

The e.l.f. primer turned this perfect red into a muted pink. The MAC primer almost gives the illusion of clear gloss – the shine is fantastic.

In this primer face-off the clear winner is MAC prep + prime lip!
